Sol Negru Feteasca Neagra
This is a single varietal feteasca neagra wine, which is an indigenous romanian variety with moldovan origins. It has been grown for hundreds of years on substantial plantings in the south of Moldova and eastern Muntenia.
Feteasca Neagra can produce quite bold and complex red wines, wines that can be compared to new world cabernet sauvignon, mostly due to their full body and elegant texture, thus resulting in quite distinctive wines, with a pronounced typicity and spiciness.
Visual
Deep and noble ruby color, not very opaque, with elegant bright-copper shades towards the rim of the glass.
Olfactory
The nose is strong, filled mostly with red fruits and spicy flavours: blackberry, nutmeg, ripe sour cherry, overripe cranberry, redcurrant, wolfberry, marionberry, blackcurrant, rowanberry, cherry tree wood and black soil dust. An instant later the nose is filled with elegant notes of red pepper, sweet tobacco, black pepper, light roasted oakwood and some nuanced hints of green pepper.
Gustatory
The wine is extra-dry, with high alcohol level, high acidity and firm tannin. It feels ripe, tannic and complex, with a grippy and seedy mouthfeel. This is a well structured, firm and elegant wine, as it tastes crisp and supple. It has a very harmonious body and a nuanced fruity and a bit woody accent. The wine is quite lean and well balanced and it has a bitter-tart feeling towards the end of the palate.
Aftertaste
It has a very long finish and an balanced, seedy-crisp aftertaste.
This is definitely a fine Wine of Moldova and the overall rating says the same, with 91.2 points scored it is right there, among the best wines we’ve tasted so far.
Conclusion: this is a very fine feteasca neagra wine in its prime form – complex, elegant and well structured – a wine that can still age for another year or two before it will start its decline. Our suggestion is to drink this wine right here and right now, as long as it is still young and beautiful – expressive and flamboyant. We would recommend to pair this wine with soft and fat-rich beef steaks, like for example a filet mignon steak with red sauce or a tournedos rossini, just remember to keep the filet mignon steak rare.
Enjoy!
